What is a Memory Gem
Memory Gems are created by mingling the ashes of your loved one or pet with molten glass to create vibrant, detailed, truly artistic works of art. Each miniature masterpiece is formed in the flame and hand finished by our Velvet Box Artists resulting in sculptures and jewelry with the strength and beauty to bring comfort to you and your family for generations to come.
Families today are spread across the nation and throughout the world, and Memory Gems make it possible for them to have stunningly beautiful, discrete memorials that contain the ashes of their loved one they can keep close to their hearts wherever they may be. And because the process uses less than 1/4 tsp. of ashes for up to 10 pieces, families are free to scatter, bury, or use the remaining ashes in other memorials.
Our Inspiration
In early 2000 I lost my Dad. The arrangements meeting was a blur except for when the Funeral Director asked if I’d like some of his ashes. I said yes, though in truth I had no idea what to do with them, and that brass vial rested undisturbed in my desk drawer for three years. I was on the torch forming an art glass heart and thinking about Dad, and I remembered something he’d told me when I was a child.
The brightest stars in the sky were loved ones we’d lost watching over us.
Inspired, I created a heart as dark as the night sky with thousands of glittering silver stars and gorgeous aurora borealis streaks. Into those layers I incorporated Dad’s ashes and a diamond he gave Mom. When I wear it I feel him close to my heart, and I know he’s there watching over me.
It’s been my privilege and pleasure to create these beautiful memorial gifts for family and friends these past few years, and we’re looking forward to making this beautiful option available to you.

How much of the cremains do you need for my Memory Gems? Only a quarter of a teaspoon is all that is needed and is usually sufficient for several pieces. Our ordering kit has a small disposable spoon and all of the instructions for packing and shipping the cremains to us.
Can I get help separating the cremains? I don't think I can do it myself. This is an emotional process and we completely understand. Many funeral homes would be willing to help or call us so we can help you find a Certified Memory Gem Partner in your area.
Will I be able to see the cremains in my Memory Gems? Some designs use opaque glass which covers the cremains but in most cases you will be able to see them.
Will your Artists help me pick a design? Absolutely. We'll offer suggestions of color and style based on your thoughts and questions. We want you to choose the perfect tribute for your loved one and we'd be delighted to help you through the process.
Will my Memory Gem look EXACTLY LIKE the pictures? No, each Memory Gem is unique. There are several reasons each piece is different, first of all the hot glass moves in the flame and altars the color pattern. Added cremains react to the extreme heat and release tiny bubbles, they'll be moving in the hot glass as well.
How long will it take to get my Memory Gems? It generally takes 4 to 6 weeks to get your Memory Gem but we make every effort to get you the item sooner.
Will all of the cremains be used and if not what will you do with them? It's quite possible there will be leftover cremains and we will return any unused portions to you. During the creation process we mix the ashes with clear glass and we will ship back any remaining pieces of it as well. We recommend keeping this small glass rod (infused with cremains) for future pieces.
